It is an empowering feeling to learn something new and challenging. With surfing, it is no different, now imagine learning it with someone you hand selected, and also viewing their surf teaching profile. It’s also nice to make a connection with a new person.
With Surf and Yoga, you can do exactly this. I had the pleasure of having a surf lesson with the Surf and Yoga founder, Dris Mi. We agreed to meet at a cafe in the morning, just before 5:30 am.
That’s correct, it was early, and the sky was beginning to open up. We rode on his motorbike, because, that is another thing I have yet to master. He is a safe driver, by the way. He knows I’m not the strongest swimmer, so he chose a surf spot where the waves were gentle, and with more or less, ‘litter free’ water.
Because I hate swimming in dirty water, then again, who does…? He shows me on the beach the body movements, and stance needed while on the surfboard.
I look over me should and see other surfers beginning to enter the water. I begin to feel a bit concerned, because I forgot to mention, how much I hate water. Dris calmly reminded to be open to being in the moment.
He also encouraged some breathing techniques he adopted from doing yoga.
After breathing through my oncoming panic attack, we hit the water. It was cold but not as cold as I had imagined. I paddled out with Dris by my side. There was a moment where I thought, even if I didn’t surf even a small wave, it would be okay.
I overcame a fear of, dirty, cold water, and drowning. What was pleasure in learning to surf? Well, after taking a closer look at my instructor’s arms, I thought, not a bad view, in between coughing up salt water…
